The 63-year-old German, who has been out of work since leaving RB Leipzig in the summer, will take over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked on Sunday following a 4-1 defeat to Watford.
Rangnick is a highly respected coach who has a reputation for developing young players and playing an attacking style of football.
He is expected to make a significant impact at United, who have been struggling for form in recent months.
Rangnick's first game in charge will be against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday, December 5.
